Rory McCarthy

Rory is a father of two who has been in Pittsburgh for the past 15 years. Originally from Maine, he came to Pittsburgh in 2003 to pursue a graduate degree in Cultural Anthropology and has been here since. Rory is currently employed by the VA in health care research.

Rory began taking pictures a couple years ago, though he has always been interested in photography. Getting his first smart phone, and creating an Instagram account worked in concert to get him taking a bunch of pictures. This past summer, Rory started experimenting with a DSLR and feels he still has a long way to go in his journey.

This picture was taken after the he finished playing his first game of Carcassonne. He was taken by the original composition and the way it seemed to convey multiple messages at one time.

“It is hard to put into words what being involved in this gallery means. I started posting pictures on Instagram without thinking anyone was really looking. Having a photo hanging in this gallery is such an honor and I look forward to seeing it there!”

Rory tells us there are lots of people deserving of thanks for the encouragement and patience that has helped him along this path, but no one more than his family. He says they put up with a lot. I also think the various Instagram groups and organizations that support the entire Pittsburgh Creative Community deserve mentioning here.
